  • ​Mainz is located approximately 30km southwest of Frankfurt.

  • The population of Mainz is approximately 217,000.

  • This makes the city comparable to Geelong (which has a population of 271,000).

What is the city known for?

  • The state of Rhineland-Palatinate is famous for its wine (especially Riesling).

  • Johannes Gutenberg 

    • Born in Mainz, Gutenberg was an inventor and craftsman, best known for the introduction of letterpress printing in Europe with his movable-type printing press. ​

    • His presence won't be forgotten in Mainz with his name being used to mark several events and locations across the city: Gutenberg Museum, Johannes Gutenberg University of Mainz & Mainzer Johannesnacht (a 4-day festival in June celebrating the inventor).

    • Römerberg - the city's central square located in the Old Town, which was rebuilt after its bombing in World War 2. 

    • Goethe House Museum - a museum dedicated to famed writer, Johann Goethe, who was born in the city; author of Faust & The Sorrows of Young Werther.​

    • Main Tower - a building in the CBD offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding areas.

    • Heidelberg Castle​.
